MOTU unveils portable audio interface
28 July, 2008 | 10.00AMLast week, Mark Of The Unicorn announced the arrival of their UltraLite Mk3 portable, bus powered, FireWire audio/MIDI interface.
Sporting dual XLR microphone inputs with integrated preamps, 10 inputs and 14 outputs, up to 192 kHz sampling rates with 24-bit resolution, the UltraLite is a terrific option for laptop DJs and producers who travel regularly.
What’s more, the UltraLite Mk3 now includes integrated digital mixing with effects.
The effects options include 7-band parametric EQ with low- and high-pass filtering, flexible reverb, and two different types of compressor.
The first compressor is a straightforward affair, based on conventional designs and including threshold, ratio, attack, release, and gain parameters.
The second compressor – The Leveler – is a dead-on recreation of the Teletronix LA-2A optical compressor.
What’s so special about the LA-2A?
The original unit was a fully analog, tube-based, optically controlled compressor/limiter that – when set up properly – was almost completely transparent, adding punch and presence without squishing the signal into lifelessness.
Take it from us, we heard the Leveler at this year’s Winter NAMM show and were thoroughly blown away by its ability to make mixes sound massive.
This combination of features makes the UltraLite worth a serious look for both road warriors and smaller studios.
