MOTU announces new 896mk3 FireWire audio interface
14 June, 2008 | 2.28AMMOTU, the daddies of the audio breakout box world, are really spoiling us with their new 896mk3 soundcard.
This baby is a realistic choice for the semi-pro and pro alike, so for all the nerdy specs, you know what to do…

The bottom line is that this box of tricks give you 28 inputs and 32 outputs.
In full: eight XLR outs, two main XLRs, eight preamp inputs (operating at rates up to 192 kHz); two optical banks of ADAT lightpipe (16 channels at 48 kHz), complete with AES/EBU and S/PDIF connectors for separate digital I/O, allowing you to hook up any instrument you can possibly fathom.
Onboard effects include reverb, parametric EQ and compression/limiting.
The 896mk3’s Classic Reverb provides five different room types, three frequency shelves with adjustable crossover points, shelf filtering and reverb lengths up to 60-seconds.
Two forms of compression are supplied: a standard compressor with conventional threshold / ratio / attack / release / gain controls and the Leveler, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A optical compressor, which provides vintage, musical automatic gain control.
Finally, the EQ section provides 7-band parametric EQ modeled after British analog console EQs, featuring 4 filter styles (gain / Q profiles) to effectively cover a wide range of audio material.
Whilst the DSP is a nice addition, I’m guessing that most of you want this plainly as a routing device, and for the price of $1,295, it routes at quite good value for money.
