More proof that something’s stirring in Glasgow

More proof that something’s stirring in Glasgow

Is it us, or is something stirring in Glasgow? The city seems to be sprouting a decent amount of fresh techno talent at the moment, and all of them seem to be blooming at roughly the same time.

Sei A

There’s the Deepchord [a] sounding Wireman [a], whose debut 12” release on Prime Numbers [l] caused waves recently (check it in the player below), Soma’s rising star Mr. Copy [a] who was featured on the label’s up and coming compilation ‘Somabeta’, and Andrew Graham’s Sei A [a] project which has been going from strength-to-strength since last March.

Now today, a community whisper from Glasgow veterans Silicone Soul [a] alerted us to a new series of vinyl releases coming from their label Darkroom Dubs [l] in March called, fittingly, ‘The Sound of Glasgow’, which aims to showcase the new talent hiding out in their home city.

Part 1 of ‘The Sound of Glasgow’ features Sei A, and newcomer Gary Beck [a], who was featured on Richie Hawtin’s recent ‘The Sounds of Can Elles’ compilation, as well as Soma’s ‘Somabeta’.

Wireman

Silicone Soul said that their new series was “inspired by early 80’s Glaswegian indie label Postcard, and their ‘Sound Of Young Glasgow’ ethos”.

With Milton Jackson [a] and Alex Smoke [a] having already been flying the flag for Glasgow for a number of years, the city might be, as Rocky from X-Press 2 joked on the release notes for Darkroom Dubs’ 12”, “the new Berlin”.

That might be stretching it a bit too far, but whatever they’re putting in the water up there, it’s working.
