Moodymann’s Soul Skate is the wheel deal
Moodymann’s Soul Skate is the wheel deal
24 May, 2010 | 8.42AMIf you’re headed to Detroit for Movement, you’d better be doing your calisthenics. There’s less than a week left to limber up for Mahogani Music and Kenny Dixon, Jr.’s Soul Skate party, a yearly highlight of the Detroit electronic-music festival.
For the uninitiated, Soul Skate is exactly what it sounds like: it’s soul on wheels. But forget what you learned about roller disco from ‘Xanadu’. Worlds away from the ‘70s kitsch it’s remembered for, roller disco still thrives today, and Moodymann
—with crates full of some of the deepest soul, funk, disco, and house around—is the perfect person to soundtrack its twists and turns. You can get a taste of Soul Skate from the video above, which documents Red Bull Music Academy’s London presentation of the event earlier this year (click here to hear Moodymann’s set from the party on RBMA Radio).

Soul Skate 2010 takes place Sunday, May 30 (11pm – 4am) at the Northland Roller Skating Center, 22311 W. 8 Mile Road, Detroit. Click here for tickets ($15 plus service charges).
