Moodymann: Soul Skate 2012

The run-up to DEMF 2012 has been taken up a soulful notch with news that Moodymann‘s Soul Skate party will once again be a part of its off-festival program. Detroit Don Moodymann, real name Kenny Dixon Jr., is of course already well known to dance-music fans around the world for his idiosyncratic take on house and techno and his talk-heavy DJ sets (as famously sampled by Oliver $ last year), but the Soul Skate is probably the most hallowed of occasions to see Moodymann on his home turf. Read on for more info, more sound and more vision on Soul Skates past and forthcoming.

The first Soul Skate rolled out at Northland Roller Skating Center in 2007, with Moodymann providing a soundtrack of disco, boogie, hip hop and soulful house on the ones and twos, recalling the rollerdisco golden era of the 1970s and ‘80s. The party took a pause last year, but Soul Skate 2012 intends to keep to tradition this time with Moodymann splitting the musical load with fellow Detroit jock Ken Smalls, plus New York’s Big Bob and MZ Tone from Chicago.

Despite its wealth of other selling points - the music, the free soul food, and the prospect of seeing some of DEMF’s top-tier DJs scooting around on eight wheels amongst them - Soul Skate is still primarily a skating party that attracts some of the sport’s best practitioners from around the county. It’s the US Midwest’s biggest gathering of its kind in fact, with free skate sessions for everyone as well as team choreography and competitions. To that end, the five best skaters found on May 26 will be shuttled over to a forthcoming Soul Skate edition in London to show off their talents in ol’ Blighty. To get you limbered up, below is some video footage of the inaugural gathering in 2007, and at the top of the page you’ll find the video put together by SoulSkateTV, highlighting some of the most skillful wheelers of Soul Skate’s past, set to a soundtrack of Mahogani Music and KDJ classics - Moodymann’s vinyl-only cut “Technologystolemyvinyle” and ”Forevernevermore”, plus two tracks from KDJ signee Andrés - “Make It Last” and ”Change My Mind”.
