Moguai and Mau5trap Ar Lyve

Moguai and Mau5trap Ar Lyve

You know how the old saying goes: Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door. Plus, you stand a chance of snaring a much bigger mouse.

Deadmau5 [a] has been beefing up his Mau5trap [a] imprint, and he’s snapped up a doozy: Moguai [a].

The progressive-house mainstay first came to the label in 2009 with the singles ‘Zyvox’ and ‘Lyve’/’Impereal’, and he followed those up early last month with ‘Nyce’/’Blau’. This week sees the release of Moguai’s ‘We Ar Lyve’, and not only is it his debut artist album: it’s the first artist album released on Mau5trap to come from someone who’s not Deadmau5.

Moguai has risen to the occasion with an ambitious album as wide-ranging as his DJ sets. Pumping, melody-drenched progressive house is the order of the day, especially on instant anthems like ‘Zyvox’, ‘Impereal’ and ‘Oyster’, tracks so colorful they could make Gui Boratto sound grayscale by comparison.

But Moguai also delves into breakbeats on ‘Flex, Rex, Mansion’, an MC-led tune that namechecks clubs like Paris’ Rex and Berlin’s Watergate and Tresor, and ‘Blau’ and ‘Nyce’ display a debt to Daft Punk’s pulse-raising filter play. There’s even a spot of tough, evil-minded electro house with ‘Ataque’, while the closing ‘Lyve’ is a massive slab of ringing harmonies and rock ‘n’ roll bass throb.
