Model 500 interview @ Dissonanze
13 May, 2008 | 9.39AM- Section: Videos Topics: Dissonanze
You always know an interview is going to be bad when you turn up and the person you’re interviewing says, “I don’t really want to do an interview”.
So, I sweet-talked Model 500 a little bit and coaxed out a few select quotes for you to mull over.
Juan Atkins - the mastermind behind Model 500 - created techno.
Yes, he created it, more than two decades ago (along with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May), so I caught up with him and his crew (including another Godfather of techno known as Mad Mike) to ask them about their set tonight at the Dissonanze festival in Rome.
Finding these guys was pretty difficult - they were stowed away deep within the catacombs of Rome’s Palazzo dei Congressi venue - but luckily a sign bearing the name “Model 500” was on their door.
Despite being in his forties, Juan Atkins looked about 25 - a sign that his success has brought him dividends over the last two decades.
I’m assuming Model 500 can make diva-ish demands too, being the daddies of the techno scene, an assumption perhaps justified by their stocked Redbull fridge in the background.
Mr. Atkins sipped on Coke and Redbull for the ten minutes I was there - I think he was on a caffeine comedown.
Model 500 are legends, so I hope you enjoy this rare interview.
