Michael Mayer’s first Beatport chart

He may be a staunch vinyl supporter when he DJs, but Kompakt supremo Michael Mayer has finally decided it’s time to share the love with his first ever chart on Beatport.
Laudably, his selection isn’t full of tracks from his own labels, and covers the full range of his eclectic, pop-tinged style.
That said, Mayer’s number one is ‘Time Is Over’, a brand new release on K2 from newcomer Nicholas Stefan.
Featuring a searing synth-line, epic drops and an unashamedly emotive feel, it’s apparently one of the very few demos that Kompakt signed instantly upon hearing.
Other highlights include The Field’s typically sublime remix of Sasha’s ‘Mongoose’, where the Swedish indie-techno hotshot layers twinkling melodies over a pulsing, finely-honed beat.
Meanwhile, Tiga’s Italia 90 remix of Alter Ego’s ‘Gary’ drops the BPMs to around 115, offering a neat counterpoint for those times when the endless techno churn gets a bit much.
And finally, there’s a surprise in store in the form of Phantom Ghost’s ‘You Are My Mate’.
The quirkiest release on deep techno imprint Dial for a long time, it’s a kind of melancholy singalong which manages to sound half-sad, half-hilarious, in keeping with Mayer’s anti-purist approach.
With the forthcoming Total 9 compilation, a new album from SCSI-9, and fresh releases on Wolfgang Voigt’s legendary Profan imprint to look forward to, it looks like Kompakt HQ is firing on all cylinders over the coming months.
In the meantime, check below for a taste of that irrepressible Cologne flavour.
