Metisse is a sub-label of Belgian imprint Curle, which was set up to release remixes.
The concept of a remix-only operation isn’t a new one, but at a time when a good proportion of labels dress up mediocre releases with a big name rework, Curle have made no secrets about their intention for Metisse.
Consisting solely of the reworks, it’s clear that the label is to be judged on these merits alone — an approach that yields great dividends here.
First up is Bpitch artist Zander VT, who takes on Mark August’s ‘Warm’.
Clocking in at over ten minutes, his epic strings and pulsing acidic rhythms are lent a mysterious, in places ominous edge by rich, dubby chords.
Tobias’s version of Tampopo’s ‘Helicopters Got Cameras’ also favours an extended format.
In this instance, though, Mr Freund opts for a lighter touch, and breathy chords populate his rolling, repetitive techno groove.
It goes to show that if you are going to get high profile remixes on board, you may as well just give them their own platform.
