Mermaids
Mermaids
Muffler [Hospital Records]
19 August, 2007 | 2.36PMThis is what people who know nothing about drum & bass would call ‘intelligent drum & bass’.
It sits on the fence between the Good Looking-style and rave-style and is very atmospheric and cinematic.
Its producer obviously spent as much time implementing the extremely subtle pads and textures in ‘Mermaid’ as he did its fluttering amens and punchy sub bass.
The guitar melodies that come in halfway between the first drop and the breakdown are extremely subtle and delicate – a sign that Muffler
is a deep and meticulous producer.
Also, Muffler’s vocal wailing sample that continues from the drop over the breakdown is similarly tender.
Is it really necessary for D&B producers to keep using the damn amen drum, though?
Anyways, onto the B-side called ‘Waves Breaking’.
This is a bit more ravey than its flip, but is still very dreamy and drifting, containing a lot of wide pads and strings.
This is the kind of tune that will help your set build momentum, only to be succeeded by progressively harsher tracks.
Whatever the case, ‘Waves Breaking’ is undoubtedly hypnotic and different – which (despite the fact that it won’t be for everybody) makes it worth checking out.
