Merky
Skream [Southside Dubstars]
21 October, 2008 | 8.31AMOriginally released in 2006, Merky was part of an EP series released on Southside Dubstars
, a label focusing on the murkier end of the garage sound.
Finally getting its digital release two years later, dubsteppers now have the chance to get their mits on this rare as hens’ teeth package.
Far removed from Skream’s wobbly, tech sounding dubstep of today, this tune is a more minimal two-step affair.
The track heavily features many elements that are associated with modern day grime, including backing strings and a resoundingly deep, percussive bass.
Essentially, however the track title speaks for itself; it’s grimey, bass driven and murky.
Reminiscent of some of the earlier productions of Rob Smith, ‘Merky’ is indicative of the early dubstep and grime sound, and highlights how far this fresh musical genre has advanced in terms of sounds, influences and productions.
