Meet one of Scotland’s finest DJs: Warner Powers
3 July, 2008 | 11.14AMDuring the last ten years, few Scottish DJs have had the same attention as Warner Powers
, and realizing he has too much to tell us about his high-quality music, we had to travel to Scotland to meet one of today’s most relevant producers rising from the UK.
Being supported by big names such as Eric Prydz, Steve Angello, Juge Jules, and Essential Mix’s very own Pete Tong, this is just the beginning for one of the most innovative and self-style DJs of all times: Warner Powers.
Check the interview after the jump.
When does the “Warner Powers” project begin?
The “Warner Powers” project began about 12 years ago when I was a young DJ in my local town of Edinburgh, Scotland.
I was playing nearly at every club in the town and the name automatically grew until becoming Warner Powers.
The “Warner Powers” project is all about making great music.
As I still DJ from time to time, I love the feeling of playing my new songs to a crowd just to await for their reaction.
Some DJ friends of mine get the music I like to share, like Eric Prydz, Dean Newton, and Huggy.
I also send music sometimes to Steve Angello, Judge Jules, and Pete Tong.
Over the years of making music I have had great support from the people I used to send music to.
One of my first tracks was ‘Space Invaders Are Back’, which was a DJ tool, though.
Joachim Garraud was the first to play it out live and then some big names started to follow him.
It was played for 9 weeks on Judge Jules’ Radio 1 in the UK, and as it won his “Tried And Tested” song of the week on the 9th one, I’m so happy about that. People loved it!
Which is the style you’ve always being influenced by?
When I was younger I was influenced by the harder style of house music, like Olav Basoski and Tom Novy, which is more pumping house rather than hard house.
I’m currently influenced by the Swedish house music. I don’t know what it is but they seem to have it right with their sound.
I prefer to try developing my own sound now. Anyway, I still have a Swedish input into the songs I make.
Sometimes I think people expect me to use a huge studio or something. Last week someone asked me, “What studio do you go to?”
I’m not used to going to studios. All my music is made on my trusty Sony laptop with Cubase 4, some plugins, and my not-to-be-missed earphones.
When it comes to mastering, I use my desktop PC to listen to tracks louder.
Do you really think dance music is changing?
If music hasn’t been constantly changing it would be so boring!
Of course music is changing. Every week I listen to hundreds of tracks out there, and I really don’t get the point in making a song that sounds like a thousand others out there.
Mp3s have helped a lot. Few people know how heavy a box of 12” records is!
Still, mp3s are not always the best. They’re easy to end up in the wrong hands because of the internet, like p2ps and common illegal download sites.
Music has changed because of people. Nonetheless, you just have to keep on the right path making music while keeping it fresh.

How’s the club scene in Scotland?
The clubs in my hometown used to be great. In fact, there are still some nights that I cannot miss! What happens in Edinburgh is that there are always the same DJs playing at the same clubs, which is very stale.
I can say that people go clubbing here because “It’s cool,” and not because of music. When I travel to DJ I find that clubbers are older and get more interested in listening to good music. Exactly the opposite.
Any DJ, singer, or songwriter you would like to work with in the future?
When people ask me this, I always say I would love to work with Eric Prydz. His music-making ability is second to none—fresh and excellent.
Apart from Eric, I would love to work with Moby as a songwriter. Moby has always been a legend for me!
Which is currently your biggest tune?
The new songs from Steve Angello are great, as well as the wicked sounds of Pryda. My new song, titled ‘The Crunch’ is very nice, too.
I’m sure you’ll all hear it pretty soon!
