20 April, 2009 | 12.32PMStark forward thinking techno and minimal isn’t the kind of sound you’d expect from a lawyer and devout family man, but Norman Nodge
finds himself back once again on fellow Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann’s self-titled record label.
Following his 2007 ‘NN’ EP, which combined cold basslines with simple techno drums and bleepy minimal slews, the Berghain-affiliated producer’s ‘MDR 5’ follows with subtly evolving techno soundscapes and meticulous, repetitive, stark beats.
The deep and hypnotic machine music on ‘MDR 5’ has that distinct German warehouse techno sound. ‘Attitudes’ is the low-slung breezer of the pack, extolling melodic virtues and orchestral squeeks through contrasting FX lines.
‘Maniac’ and ‘ManMade’ remind of the kind of perfect techno loop music the anonymous EQD crew put out, with ‘ManMade’ in particularly combining squiggly synth lines with off kilter hand claps, and ‘Rush’ brings some new tribal drum flavours to the set.
All in all, ‘MDR 5’ is a competent set of futuristic techno.
