The new video for Matthew Dear‘s ”In The Middle (I Met You There)” confirms Ghostly International‘s reputation as one the best labels for compelling, forward-thinking music, combined with with a genuine appreciation for progressive visual art.

Dear has, of course, been with Ghostly since the beginning, and “In The Middle (I Met You There)” is taken from his new EP Headcage, which marks another new development in his outstanding career. The DJ/producer, label head (he manages A&R for Ghostly sister label Spectral Sound with Ryan Elliot), and latter-day bandleader has embraced the collaborative process for Headcage, which is the first release from him since his 2010 Talking Heads-does-decaying-techno opus Black City. 

Headcage boasts input from co-producers Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid, who have worked with Glasser and Fever Ray in the past, and the EP is effectively a teaser for Dear’s forthcoming album Beams, which promises to be ripe with more studio pairings and is due to be released later this year.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, a few minutes should be set aside to savor this video (in full-screen mode, if possible). The treatment, conceived and directed by Morgan Beringer, is a living, breathing artwork, with tides of impressionistic brushstrokes that shift in unison with the music. Keep an ear open for the vocals as well: despite having a sound-alike quality to Dear, the track is actually voiced by Jonny Pierce of Brooklyn outfit The Drums.
