Mathias Kaden interview by Pheek

Mathias Kaden interview by Pheek

There are some people that are a bit mysterious, and we felt like we had to know more about Mathias Kaden [a], a guy who seems to have all that it takes to make trippy music like few others. Pheek [a] interviews one of his favorites.

You were introduced to music and production with Marek Hemmann and Onur Özer. What sort of roles have they played in your career? Tell us about your partnership.

I met Marek in 2002. At that time, he was a techno producer and I was a DJ. We talked about music, and decided we have to make some music together.

Marek showed me a lot of technical aspects as well as production, so after 1 year we released our first record, ‘Guten Tag EP’, on our label Freude am Tanzen.

After that, we released four more records and a few remixes.

I love to share music with my friends — music is not supposed to be for just one person.

It’s the same with Onur… We met in 2005 after Gabor (Robag Whrume) received a demo from him and released his first record on FAT!

At the same time, I released my first record on Vakant (’Circle Pit’) and Onur followed with ‘Envy EP’.

At that time, we played all our gigs together!

Onur’s style is more melodic and techno, and mine is rhythmic and more house, but sometimes he is more house and I’m more techno.

I love to play with Onur.

When you share music you can learn a lot.

It’s beautiful!

You’ve mainly worked with Vakant for releasing your EPs. Would you say you helped build the sound of the label, or did it influence you in your music?

It’s both.

Only four people produce music for Vakant [l]: Alex Smoke, Tolga Fidan, Onur Özer and me.

I helped to build the sound of Vakant, but I’ve also learned a lot too.

Vakant is a different label compared to FAT; on Vakant, i can release different styles of techno that are a bit darker, while FAT is more my house project.

There’s a difference in the aesthetics of your first EP (’Circle Pit’) and your latest bomb, ‘Myal EP’. It seems you’re using more and more organic sounds now, along with voices. What brought about that change?

A year ago, I finished building my studio with a new PA and loads of hardware, so the reason for my new direction is because I can now do what I want!

I recorded several voices and drums myself, and stayed away from the typical minimal sound.

Which artist is an inspiration for you?

My inspiration comes from different places, such as the environment, traveling and other cultures.

I don’t look to other artists, but maybe a bit of the influence comes from my DJ friends like Robag Whrume, Daniel Stefanik, Onur Özer, Marek Hemmann and Treplec.

There seems to be a parallel with the remix you did for Archipel and your ‘Myal EP’, specifically with the tribal voices. What about Archipel prompted you to bring the Kaden touch?

I did the remix at the same time as my new ‘Myal EP’.

When I received the “aya aye ashawa” samples, I quickly had the idea!

At first, I recorded my own voice with “aya aye ashawa“, and then I wanted to do it in a hypnotic African way.

Maybe the Kaden touch is the groove in the song?
