Marky and friends third birthday at The End

DJ Marky plays an eight-hour set to mark the third anniversary of his ground breaking Marky & Friends night.

It was with a huge amount of excitement and some trepidation that DJ Marky & Friends launched in January 2005, with Marky’s first five hour set in the UK navigating totally uncharted territory in club land.  The line up included Gilles Peterson and Bugz In The Attic, a marked step away from the conventional programming of drum & bass line ups in and around the capital.  The night was one of the best ever here at The End, and one of the most pioneering drum & bass events in the world was born, pushing the boundaries of what people expected from a D&B night, paving the way for Andy C’s three hour sets at Ram, breaks and dubstep DJs in Shogun Audio’s main room and a rash of new nights round London featuring drum & bass DJs playing alternative sets.

In the years since, Marky’s hand-picked line ups have ranged massively, taken in some of the biggest names in drum & bass as guests, such as Fabio, Zinc and Goldie, taken DJs right out of their comfort zones with Marcus Intalex playing techno, High Contrast playing disco and Total Science playing old skool hip hop and had a massive variety of non drum & bass DJs grace the decks too, from Patrick Forge to Ben Westbeech to Norman Jay.  For the third birthday party however, DJ Marky has concocted a line up that perhaps perfectly epitomises the ethos of DJ Marky & Friends, with an eight hour set from the man himself in the main room and the incredible Jazzanova in the lounge.

Longer sets have for years been campaigned for by drum & bass DJs, claiming an hour is far too restrictive, yet despite the boundaries being pushed since the inception of DJ Marky & Friends, there is still only one D&B DJ in the world in today’s climate capable of an eight hour solo main room set, and that’s the tornado from Sao Paulo, better known as DJ Marky.  480 minutes that will cover every facet of this music, from way back when to way ahead of its time, from the roughest beats to the smoothest basslines, from tearing amens and skanking basslines to the most sunshine licked Brasilian melodies he covers it all.  Every track is mixed to perfection at lightning-quick speed, this is the ultimate drum & bass showman in his element, and if you’re lucky he might step outside drum & bass and pull some real surprises.

The lounge is hosted by the imperious Sonar Kollektiv and Warm crew.  Heading up their line up is one of electronic music’s most influential acts; Jazzanova.  This six piece Berlin collective have had an immeasurable impact on dance music, their music has been an inspiration for a huge proportion of the finest producers of deep house, downtempo, broken beat and way beyond.  They started their careers as a DJ collective, and their epic and magically eclectic sets are the stuff of legend.  They are joined by Ali Tillet and Rob Summerhayes, two fine DJs who know their music and certainly know their way round our DJ booths.  As residents of Warm and Sonar Kollektiv these two are the envy of the DJ world, with exclusive access to one of music’s finest catalogues of music, from artists including Ame, Dixon, Henrik Schwarz, Atjazz, Wahoo, Fat Freddys Drop and much more.  Very special sets ahead.
