Marc Romboy [Simple Records]
1 August, 2007 | 2.10PMSimple Record’s guest big name producer policy adds the considerable talents of Marc Romboy
and Alexkid to an already noteworthy list of European knob-twiddlers. There’s been a man-of-the-moment point for both of them over the last 12 months but lets not get over excited just yet.
The ‘Original’ is standard fare on entry.
A touch of throbbing bassline here, a whispered vocal sample there.
A scattering of clicks and pops reminds us that we’re living in the post minimal world.
The point of this track is to give off an old skool-ish synth chord progression, with Mr Romboy’s filter carving up the melodic meat.
The lead’s accomplice is a stirring, almost trancey pad that gets its swerve come break time.
Alexkid’s version is a bit less refined and a lot more old skool, particularly in the drums department.
The Roland rim shots should induce an ‘oi oi!’ from at least one sweaty raver in every club.
The bass is withheld for impact, and when it arrives it sounds so French it should be wearing a beret and be called the croque monsieur preset.
It’s hard to fault this record, although baring some modern, German production aesthetics, it could have been conceived 15 years ago.
The sum of the producer parts here however falls a shade below the expected whole.
