Marco Carola brings da funk on Plus 8
8 May, 2008 | 11.28AM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog
Minus stoke the fires of their ten years celebration with a killer release on their sister label Plus 8 from Marco Carola.
It’s hard to remember the days when Marco Carola was duking it out in the loop-heavy bosh techno scene.
Back in the mid-1990s, techno was a much different climate to today’s more minimalist variety.
The beats where thick and fast, and relentless loops dominated the productions.
When the scene soured a little at the turn of the century many DJs lost their footing, but Marco’s resurgence as one of the scene’s mainstays is in part thanks to his ties with Minus and a newfound dedication to funk.
Last year’s ‘Apnea’ highlighted a defining characteristic in his sound: super charged funk built around simple but insanely catchy, bouncing basslines.
His latest EP on Minus associated label Plus 8, ‘Plus One’, is a worthy addition to the “Ten Years of Minus” celebration that elaborates on this style.
Amongst the barrage of releases that Minus is throwing at you to highlight their anniversary, this is probably their most essential dancefloor accessory.
All three tracks bounce high and hard.
Our pick is ‘Jackpot’.
Built around a funk-drenched bassline and beats combo, the groove wouldn’t sound out of place in the instrumental of a Prince record, and it’s exactly this dedication to hip-shaking production that has made him one of Europe’s top-draw techno DJs over the past year.
The other tracks on the EP are by no means slouchers either.
‘Swingback’ is currently riding high in Beatport’s minimal chart, no doubt thanks to its tense percussive synth lines.
‘Lost Connection’ works chopped up vocals into a simple yet nagging bassline that’s destroying clubs everywhere thanks to heavy play from the extended Minus team of DJs.
Da funk has never been stronger thanks to techno’s favourite Italian tunesmith.
