Marc Houle’s ‘Techno Vocals’ marks 50 for Minus

Techno just wouldn’t be the same with Richie Hawtin’s Minus [l] label. Over the years it has revolutionised the genre and delivered some of the most understated maximal minimal on the planet.

Which makes it all the more brilliant that a seemingly non-minimal musician with quite a side-stepped sense of humor should be featured as the label’s 50th release.

Whether it’s Houle’s bouncing ‘80s throw-back melodies (did we mention anything at all about the introduction of video games into mainstream culture?) as Run, Stop Restore or under his own name, or the wholly unanticipated artwork that accompanies his output, he’s clearly got a wry sense of humor.

This time, he’s done it with ‘Techno Vocals.’

Which is a song about just that - techno vocals - electro style.

Houle publicly wonders aloud about the state of his vocals.

The question doesn’t become “Why?” so much as ”Really?” - but the result stays true to Houle’s idea of fun.

And to the Minus sense of adventure.

Six minutes of absurd brilliance.

Oh yes, there is a b-side or two, but the most entertaining is perhaps the a cappella version.

Yes, the a cappella version.
