Sascha Funke [Bpitch Control]

Ellen Allien’s Bpitch Control may have enjoyed most success with Modeselektor, but the label’s real star is the prolific, understated Sascha Funke.

Funke has been with the label pretty much since its inception, releasing a succession of razor-sharp dance floor tech-house.

‘Mango’, however, marked a change in his routine. Funke decamped from Berlin to Aix in southern France last year to escape the German capital’s party culture – and he used this opportunity to record his second album.

‘Mango’ also heralds a change in musical direction: these new surroundings allowed Funke the opportunity to sample everyday sounds - check the rainfall at the end of ‘Summer Rain’ - and, with the exception of the menacing pulses of recent single ‘Double Checked’ and the ebm-ish ‘Lotre’, ‘Mango’ favours a lighter touch.

The title track is an atmospheric, old school jam, like a techno accompaniment to ‘Sueno Latino’ and ‘We Are Facing The Sun’ and ‘Feather’ both feature summery piano lines and shimmering melodies over rumbling rhythms.

Meanwhile, ‘Summer Rain’ is an acoustic, organic ambient track similar to Susumu Yokota’s work and the melancholic indie guitar of ‘Chemin des Figons’ completes his transformation.

This new album sees Funke maturing and revealing new brush strokes to his palette. Like the fruit he named it after, ‘Mango’ is his sweetest release so far.
