Manchester Producer Gamal Kabar’s debut release on Poker Flat
20 August, 2008 | 6.02AMAlso known as St. Sebastian for his work on sister label Dessous, his sound was a lot more refined and polished sounding, and a lot less ravey than on his latest Poker Flat release ‘The Filth’.
His ‘Genetics EP’ and his ‘Drunk Lover EP’, both out on Dessous, are a fine example of his other work.
Gamal Kabar only started producing three years ago and it has been said that his live performances and driving DJ sets are creating a stir in music circles, especially with his new weekly in Ibiza.
The title track on the Poker Flat EP, ‘The Filth’, by Gamal Kabar is a dark track with a seething underground sound about it.
With tweaked out sounds, and standard hands in the air party flair, this track pulls out the stops to be a hit for peak dancefloor hours.
Freaky and hypnotizing synth stabs appear regularly… as does the tight kick drum hi-hat combo, but there is nothing particularly ingenious in this production, although there is no doubt it will do well.
Polish production duo 3 Channels, known for their work on Trenton, Trapez, and Crosstown Rebels, have done a Remix of ‘The Filth’.
The remix features some more controlled elements at the beginning with a build up of freaked out sounds that erupt into uncontrolled peaks.
The remix should do well in progressive house club atmospheres.
3 Channels Dub Remix at first seemed like a welcome surprise on the EP, but rather than pushing the envelope in an unusual way, it had a formulaic generic feeling.
‘Critical Times’ by Gamal Kabar repeats the lyrics “It’s too late, you are fucked. We are fucked now.”
This one sounds like a tune for strung out dancefloor addicts.
This song will not be for everyone since it has a tendency to get on one’s nerves and is certainly not geared toward home listening.
However, I have no doubt this one will be a hit for some audiences.
Regarding his productions Gamal Kabar says, “I have always been a fan of using real instruments.
“I hate that we have become so dependent on computers, so I pride myself in using real and analogue instruments for that true bigger sound”.
