Madox interview

Italian breakbeat producer and DJ Madox [a] has just released his new album ‘Urban Plastic’ on Mantra Breaks [l].

We caught up with Madox to find out more.

Your debut album features breakbeat, hip hop, but also plenty of Brazilian sounds. What similarities do you see between Latino rhythms and breaks?

I think it’s all about the groove, I really love all the sounds that come from the roots and the Brazilian one in particular has the right party attitude that links very well with the style of breaks I want to produce.

I’ve also produced an Afro/breaks track as well called Roger Milla where I use huge groovy African percussions over a ploddy breaks groove with devastating effects.

What was your plan behind the album - did you want it to be a dancefloor friendly mix, or a home-listening record?

Basically it’s a dancefloor album but in some points you can find melodies and vocals that could be good for the home-listeners, it’s my first album so I wanted it to reflect my past years productions.

Breakbeat is gaining popularity in Spain, do you think Italy will get hooked on the breaks too?

Hopefully, even if Italy is an house addicted country.

I hope that one of my upcoming singles could cross through the genres and open a little door on the Italian dance scene, most of the gigs I do are usually outside of Italy but there are few good parties in there like in Catania and Rovereto, and a few people are working hard to build a proper scene (like the breaks.it guys).

So let’s keep our finger crossed for the future.

Is the relationship between electro house and breakbeat something you’re going to be exploring further?

Absolutely yes, there’s a new single with John Acquaviva on the way, and I’m going to do more electro-breaks crossover tracks in the next few months as soon as I have the chance to lock myself in the studio for a bit.

Where do you see the breaks scene going in the next 12 months?

I’ve seen a lot of breaks producers and DJs moving towards the electrohouse and Ed Banger style.

Maybe in the next few months we are going to hear more hybrid tracks on that tip.

My next step will be to crossover breaks with all that new wonky house style that is really catching my attention at the moment so stay tuned for all the results of these experiments.
