Q-Project [Machine Funk]

The ironically-titled ‘Jungle Is Dead’ from Machine Funk 004 comes from the same producer who co-wrote a “Hardcore Will Never Die” remix nearly eight years ago.
Considering that the genre known as hardcore preceded jungle, perhaps Q-Project is seeing life through a different perspective these days?
The meat of this tune suggests that jungle IS dead – there isn’t a pure sine tone in sight that isn’t layered with some hideously-distorted effect of the future.
But Q-Project is clearly taking the piss, because the main melody in ‘Jungle Is Dead’ sums up everything that’s good about jungle.
It’s the centerpiece of any rave tune – staccato bleeps that wouldn’t sound out of place in one of The Prodigy’s works of yesteryear.
‘Jungle Is Dead’ is built around Q-Project’s trademark amen loops that switch between two base pitches, and sound ton-heavy.
Throw in a few James Brown screams and a sample of Martin Sheen from Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, and you’re looking at hot dance floor ammo.
Moving on to ‘Bless You’, this is something a million miles away from ‘Jungle Is Dead’.
It’s built around a resonant, rounded bassline that taps on the 16th alongside some exquisitely-arranged drums.
Q-Project’s interconnecting beatbreaks here are brilliantly executed, and aside from some predictably excellent effects and off-kilter ragga chuckling, a subliminal monotone square wave repeats itself to good effect.
This is a quality track to shake up your drum & bass sets with.
