When I hear of world music fusions with electronic music, I can’t help but think of cheesy, synthetic pan flutes and sitars over Casio drum breaks. But the new release from Hyperdub’s LV has given me an entirely new viewpoint.

Their roots-oriented dubstep has caught the bug of South Africa’s Kwaito scene. As electronic sounds such as house music make an impact globally, regions like South Africa are coming up with their own interpretations—which are, in turn, creating further mutations back in the US, Europe and the UK. Okmalumkoolkat takes the front row on the LV track and as part the Johannesburg group Dirty Paraffin, he demonstrates how hip-hop and house music come together.

”Boomslang” is out now on Hyperdub, backed with the equally bananas “Zharp.”
