Luciano: revealing interview on GetTheCurse
5 November, 2007 | 10.32AMFrench music blog GetTheCurse has just uploaded a revealing interview with Chilean DJ Luciano, who in Beatportal’s opinion, is currently one of the best DJs in the world.
Here’s our pick of some of his best quotes from the interview, which also includes music snippets:
1
“I discovered electronic music at the age of 15, when this Italian friend of mine, which was my building caretaker’s son, gave me this dance music tape he brought back from Italy.
“I thought it was pretty silly at first (laughs). But I quickly got hooked. It wasn’t much the music actually, but more the ongoing party feel that was attached to the whole thing.”
2
“I was introduced to music very early on. My father used to repair jukeboxes for a living, there were dozens of boxes full of records at home, and I kept listening to those records on random.
“At the time, I lived in Switzerland, which was where my father was from. My mother was from Chile.
“When my parents broke up, my mother & I went homeless and had to move to Chile.
“We didn’t have any money and we settled down in a tough neighborhood in Santiago.
“Our first years there were pretty difficult. My mother knew I was into music but she couldn’t afford a stereo or records, so she offered me a guitar.
“I spent my time playing and writing songs on this guitar, learning everything on my own. Then I had my first bands at school.
“We played punk rock and the first record that had a real impact on me was a tape from french band Berurier Noir a friend from the French Alliance in Chile gave me.
“What really amazed me was this drum machine they used.
“When you have a band, your desire to play pretty much depends of every other member’s availability.
“If the drummer hangs on with his girlfriend, you can’t practice (laughs). That drum machine seemed liked the solution to my problem (laughs).”
3
“I’m labelled as “minimal” but my background really is house.
“That’s my thing and that’s what I tend to play these days… I’m really glad to see that there’s been a new found interest in house music lately.
“There’s so much feeling and soul in house music. I keep getting loads of minimal demos in my mail box and that really bores me.
“It’s all about Ableton...Now, things are way too easy.
“You have a computer, all you need is a cracked version of Ableton and you’re set.
“It opened a lot of doors and there’s people doing incredible stuff that way.
“But anyone can finalize a track and most of those guys record ten soulless tracks a day, what’s the point ?
“Having such an easy access to recording material is good thing in itself but there’s way too much crap flowing around.”

”Ricardo Villalobos
is eight years older than me, he has always been like my older brother.
“He took me under his arm. He was already connected, he lived in Frankfurt, working for record labels.
“Everytime he came back to Chile, he brought tons of promos because we couldn’t afford records.
“That’s how we started to DJ, we sneaked into rock parties to play records for half an hour or until the other guys were fed up with our music and started crushing their cigarettes on our vinyls (laughs).”
