Rework [Playhouse]
7 November, 2007 | 2.31PM- Section: Music Recommendations
One of the highlights of the recent fifth installment of Frankfurt label Playhouse’s seminal ‘Famous When Dead’ compilation series, this electronic house track on a collision course with the bastard offspring of Jane Birkin proves that despite the odd slip-up, Ata’s still got a great ear for snapping up dance floor music with a pop twist.
A collaboration between German producers Daniel Varga and Michael Kübler and vocalist Sascha Hedgehog (surely some mistake?!), Playhouse has now commissioned two remixes that’ll serve to raise the track’s profile.
Chelsea Girls’ version employs insistent, skipping percussion and heavy beats.
The spiky one’s lazy, repetitive vocals work well against this mixture of subtlety and force, but it doesn’t compare to Parisian DJ Chloe’s reshape.
The Kill the DJ resident’s mixes have always been impressive, but her production career has been slow to gain ground.
That’s changing, though, because apart from her impressive, imminent debut album, ‘The Waiting Room’, Chloe’s remix of Rework sees her voyage to the outer limits of underground dance music, riding a trippy acid bass and bringing tight claps and razor-sharp percussion to Rework’s murky, heroin chic house.
