Losing It with Russell G
Losing It with Russell G

debutant Russell G has made quite an impression with his first release ‘Lose It’.
As well as licensing enquiries for a major compilation series, positive feedback from the clubs and summer festivals has been flowing in thick and fast, with Asle, Timo Garcia, Andy Moor, Kamisshake, Paul Thomas and Tall Paul to name just a few all heavily supporting the release.
Whilst Russell is still getting to grips with being on the receiving end of the feedback, we catch up with him for a chat on the good and the bad of the switch from DJ to producer…
Before you settled down into the house groove, you were a trance DJ. Did this early education affect your sound when you made your move into production?
I’d say definitely. I’ve always loved a breakdown, a good melody and I think this shows… especially in this EP.
Your latest release, ‘Lose It’, on Whoop! Records is also your debut, how does it feel to be able to play your own music in your sets, as well as hear it in other people’s sets?
It feels great to now be able to play my own tracks in my sets, when I first heard Tall Paul
had been heavily supporting and charting Led Astray it was an amazing feeling especially as Tall Paul is a favorite DJ of mine and has been for many years.
How would you best describe Led Astray?
A percussive, grooving, uplifting piece of house.
What do you enjoy more? Producing or DJing?
I love both but DJing would have to edge it for me, there’s nothing better than playing the music I love to a crowd who (hopefully, ha ha) love it just as much.
What’s the scene in Birmingham like these days? Or are you jetting off to too many far flung places to notice?
Apart from Godskitchen & The Medicine quite a few places tend to opt for the electro house sound which is still as popular and shows no sign of weakening any time soon. There are however a lot of promotions in the city pushing some really good music and DJs which is no bad thing at all.
What is the best place you have visited on ‘work’?
So far my favourite place would have to be Poland where I played at the excellent ‘Piekarnia’ in Warsaw back in April, both the venue and the people there made it a great weekend, I can’t wait to play there again!
Who’s your favourite person to spend a night on the decks alongside? And who would you most like to see remixing your work?
Whenever me and Paul Thomas (Chemical Reaction / For You) get together behind the decks it always gets a bit mad, I’m still recovering from a gig we played together a couple of weeks ago! As for remixing my tracks if Steve Lawler was to turn his hand at one of tracks I’d be a happy man.
What has been the biggest influence on your work over the years?
Over the last couple of years I’d have to say listening to sets from people such as Steve Lawler & Eric Prydz among others has been the main influence.
What are your favourite tunes of the moment?
I’d have to say the scene at present is the strongest it has been for a while in my opinion with so much good music out there, tune-wise at the moment I’m loving the stuff Dusty Kid is doing (especially his remix of Maskio – Monday), Eric Prydz is on fire at the moment and ‘Ironman’ is further proof if it was needed of that.
What’s next on the agenda for Russell G?
Firstly to push myself as a DJ as much as possible and to continue with the production work where there are a few remixes in the pipeline and some very exciting collaborations planned so watch this space!
