London Clubs: Bass in the Place London
16 May, 2008 | 8.32AM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog
Recently I have ventured out to some of London’s new clubs.
They have all been very nice, which is better than just being shit.
However, I have begun to notice a worrying trend, they have all been very quiet.
Why is it that venues seem to think that having a good sound system is an option?
It’s not.
It’s one of the most fundamental things you must have in a club if it is ever going to go beyond the type of place you only go because the queues are too long elsewhere.
One of these new venues (that is, in fact, an old mediocre venue that has been given a brush of paint and as such has become a new, mediocre venue) was where I decided to spend my birthday less than two weeks ago.
I thought it looked like a good option; two floors, some (YES!) disco on one floor and what was advertised as quality house music (it wasn’t) on the other.
One floor of the club is dominated by a bar, and the lack of a dance floor in what was advertised as a club was odd.
The music, however, was top, and kudos to the DJs for playing to the backs of those waiting to get drinks.
Upon venturing downstairs, I realized that I was having a normal conversation with my friend Sophie — whilst she was standing next to one of the main speakers.
There was no over exaggerated mouth movements or cupping of ears, just an arms-length, normal chat of the type you would have in the queue for a club with a decent sound system in it.
When you can hear the bodily functions of attendees before you can smell them (sly nod to the smoking ban there), then there is a serious lack of boom in your box.
Therefore, as a stand against clubs with horrible sound systems, this week my recommendations will only be those that will be playing music how it should be heard!
Play it loud. play it proud! Or when in doubt, bang it out!
