London club review: Mulletover
28 February, 2008 | 5.40AMMulletover, the only east London club night with a type of hairstyle in its name, loves throwing parties in wacky locations.
Anybody who was around for their closing party in Ibiza last year will testify that the decision to hold a rave on the edge of a cliff next to an active lighthouse was an inspired, if ultimately flawed, idea (thanks Guardia Civil).
On this particular occasion a skanky Shoreditch car park is the venue of choice, which for the time being at least, appears to have become their spiritual home.
The first thing Beatportal notices as we enter the two-tiered space is that it doesn’t smell.
We mark that down as a con before having a brief scout around for our familiars and the bar.
So hip it hurts New York label DFA are occupying the second ‘room’ tonight with their Death From Abroad concept which has nothing to do with terrorists and alot to do with quality guests from outside the US.
Gucci Sound System, Shit Robot
and Mock n Toof are all entertaining this evening but we head firstly to the main space where Sian
[right] is already pushing the BPMs with a dark selection of tech house and bass-heavy minimal.
His set is fairly danceable at least but in the overall context of the evening it all seems a bit too hard and fast for this point in the proceedings, a point which is further emphasised when headliner Efdemin [pictured, top image] takes over around 2:30 am.
His self-titled debut album from last year [check it in the player below] was awash with gorgeous warmth and blissful melody which does not appear, on the evidence of tonights performance, to translate to his DJ sets.
Don’t get us wrong he pulls out a decent enough set of warehouse-style house and techno, it’s just that it seems to be so far removed from his productions he could almost be spinning under a totally different
guise.
The latest Villalobos number ‘Enfants’ pulls us into more melodic territories before resident Geddes closes out the night with a much housier and ultimately more rewarding set.
This evenings musical gripes aside, Mulletover can always de depended upon to throw damn good parties which in the scheme of the the somewhat dwindling London club scene, is indeed no mean feat.
