Smash TV [Bpitch Control]

The relationship between Smash TV and Ellen Allien’s label is like that of long-term lovers.

In this instance, it’s Smash TV’s remaining member, Holger Zilske, who was suffering from “the wandering eye”, pairing off with Playhouse and then Mobilee sub-label Leena.

Having spent many (mainly happy) years together, one of the parties gets restless and decides to play the field for some excitement.

However, having done the dirt, Holger Zilske has had a crisis of conscience and has returned to the arms of his betrayed one.

Bpitch Control is just glad to have him back, and forgives his transgressions.

Maybe this is why the label has given him free reign to be less wonky and weird than usual.

The title track is a stripped back, shuffling groove, with languid rave horns – if that isn’t an oxymoron – sliding in.

The groove on ‘Breathe Me’ is even more languid, yet it boasts a chilling organ riff that offsets the foggy beats.

It’s as if Zilske is hinting that he’s back, but for him to stay for good, the label has to let him put out what he wants.

Let’s just hope that Bpitch stands by its man.
