Fancy a bit of epic Detroit techno? Originally released in 2005, Jazztronik’s remix of Little Big Bee ‘K.G.O.’ has finally seen the light of day digitally. It’s a scintillating slice of dancefloor heaven that reminds of DJ Rolando’s ‘Knights of the Jaguar’, and it’s Beatportal’s Single of the Week. We grabbed five minutes with Jazztronik to find out more about the remix he produced three years ago.

What was the creative idea behind your remix of ‘K.G.O.’?

When I produced this remix three years ago, this was the sort of style that I really wanted to produce. I don’t normally produce uptempo tracks like this so that is why I did it in this style.

It’s Detroit-techno inspired as I am quite influenced by the sound.

What instruments/software did you use to create your remix?

I used a Digital Performer. And for instruments, an Andromeda and MPC4000.

Where did the main synth lead come from?

The synth sound that is looping minimally, is actually not the synth sound that was used in the original track - I’ve forgotten what sound it is.

I sampled this sound and processed it furthermore and made a brand new sound which I played by hand. For the drum sounds in the remix, I made them on a MPC4000.

What’s your usual process for producing electronic music?

For me, it all depends on the particular track, but for this track, I first started working on the beats.

And on top of that, I layered synth sounds.

When I produce original Jazztronik material, since I am a keyboard player foremost, I mostly start by using a piano.

As for tracks intended for the dancefloor, I sometimes start by working on the beats.

What’s the most important bit of advice you can give to an aspiring producer?

I think it is best advice is to try many things and to produce as many tracks as possible.

Finally, if there’s one bit of studio kit you would really like to own, what is it?

I would like a recording booth.
