This week Repair released their new EP called ‘Lines Drawn’ on Secret Weapon Records.

Repair is a unique three-piece deep house and techno group out of Toronto, comprised of two twin brothers, Mark and Matt Thibideau, and lyricist Dawn Lewis.

The Thibideau twins have been around for years producing solid techno tracks and playing live, and Dawn’s vocals have become an integral part of Repair’s composition process.

The title track in its original form is a nice deep down tempo song, sung by Dawn with precise production that is both smooth and serene.

It evokes the glossier production sounds characteristic of the 80s and early 90s but includes the more modern sounds of techno.

The group is heavily influenced by the early Detroit techno sound, and this song is a nice lush sonic combination of their many influences - ambient, house, retro, and even alternative.

The remix by Matt Thibideau has a tech-house vibe with some funky moments that can get people’s feet moving.

To achieve their sound, Repair came up with the song idea from a live performance that was improvised and later took it to the studio where Dawn performed vocals and they created additional sounds.

The Thibideau twins do a lot of sampling, synthesizer programming and mixing, all in an analogue environment.

According to Dawn, the lyrics she wrote for ‘Lines Drawn’ are personal and very literal, which is evident from the emotive content such as, “The words came out so harsh and fast… There is no way to take them back”.

It’s clear, from looking through a catalogue of Repair releases, that relationships are a common theme for the group.

Having been together for quite a while in various formations the trio has found ways to work together.

Matt explains, “We all know where each others’ strengths are and we try to work with those.”

Mark says, “We really try to approach each song as its own entity.”

“Therefore the group dynamics change as each song has its own requirements.”

But, Matt says, “In the case of ‘Lines Drawn’, the idea came to us very easily”.

As for trying to achieve a particular sound for this release, Matt explained, “We don’t try to follow musical trends.

“In this day and age that can be risky.

“On this release we will showcase our musical and techno styles in one package to show some diversity in our sound.

“We are big fans of soundscapes with quieter details in the background.

“Techno these days has stripped many of these elements away and we feel that this was something to focus on.

“The selection of tracks on this release will hopefully cater to both DJs and home listeners.”
