Light Years EP

Cosmic Belt [Glideslope Music]

Average House here from New York label Glideslope Music, who shouldn’t have been forgiven just yet for releasing the Billie Jean sampling ‘She Says’ earlier in the year.

The EP comprises of four fairly bland deep Tech house cuts from Cosmic Belt, all characterised by spacey pads done in that ‘80s throwback kind of way.

The strongest of the group would have to be ‘Almost Caught’.

A smart xylophone-a-like riff and some sturdy arrpegiated synth action give the track a nice melodic balance but the wheels fall off when it comes to the beats, which sound brittle and a touch over- compressed.

The runt of the litter is ‘Back In Berlin’, which could hold this cruel title simply due to the pre-delayed reverb on the snare that smacks of a retro point that’s been missed entirely.

The frequency-gobbling Electro House bassline is decent but does nowhere near enough to save the track.

‘Neon Shuffle’ includes some Eastern sounding chimes and a gauche attempt at one of those synthesizer meets guitar riffs that Daft Punk managed so successfully on ‘Discovery’.

‘Dalmau’s Opus’ has a more purposeful arrangement of beats and bass alongside the obligatory out-of-space bleeps and squeaks.
