Let’s Do It EP
Dave Hughes [Palette Recordings]
28 November, 2007 | 7.28PM- Section: Music Recommendations
John Tejada’s ever-reliable Palette Recordings imprint has a stringent signing policy – for the last five years it’s only released tracks from Tejada, Justin Maxwell and Arian Leviste – so a new face on the block is inevitably greeted with high expectations.
Irish ex-pat Dave Hughes doesn’t disappoint, notably on the title track, where tight micro-rattles roll across booming sub bass and a lushly unexpected Detroit coda.
Darkly tinged, but chiselled into irresistible foot-tapping shape, it’s perfect for Palette’s hi-tech dancefloor tendencies.
‘It All Depends’ is a woozier, looser affair, featuring a male spoken-word sample ("There’s a lot of ways to look at the world") flanked with teetering, clackety percussive flickers.
It may not be as direct as ‘Let’s Do It’, but will ideally suit those times when you want to maintain a sweet, smart groove without setting off too many sparks.
Finally, ‘Realization’ picks the tempo up a couple of notches for a bleeped out, intricately crafted club burner.
It sounds fairly unassumaing at first, but get it on a sound system and all sorts of intriguing rhythmic subtleties will slowly start to emerge.
All three tracks prove that Highes is more than worthy of entering Palette’s esteemed inner circle.
