Salsoul was one of the most influential record companies in the disco era, and its digitally re-mastered catalog is now available exclusively in high quality .wav and .mp3 files on Beatport.

Founded in 1974 by the three brothers Joe, Ken and Stanley Cayre, Salsoul burgeoned to become one of the largest and most legendary disco and funk catalogs in history, having released over 300 disco 12” singles and albums throughout the disco era.

If you’re not familiar with Salsoul Records, chances are you’ve heard the labels songs or instrumentation sampled in hundreds of today’s dance tracks.

Those of you who can recall the platinum hits by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s ‘Good Vibrations’ or Black Box’ ‘Ride On Time’ know the voice of Loletta Holloway.

Jocelyn Brown, Double Exposure, First Choice, Instant Funk, Joe Battan, Innerlife, Skyy all were part of the label’s roster of artists. 

The label was based in New York City during a time when disco was coming on strong, and was profoundly supported in clubs like the Paradise Garage, Studio 54, The Loft and Gallery. 

The name “Salsoul” comes from street lingo used by urban Latinos who were absorbing African-American popular music and infusing into their own culture.

Salsoul is known not only for its legendary catalog but also for being the first record label to release a 12” single record.

The concept of the 12” was the genius of engineer Tom Moulton and effectively executed by Ken Cayre in 1976. This format would forever change disco and give birth to what we know today as electronic dance music.
