is one of the underground’s most hotly tipped producers.
Yet another one of French label Freak ’n’ Chic’s talented protégé’s (think Jamie Jones, Shonky or Marc Antona to name a few), he’s another link in the chain of cutting edge producers keeping the French scene flushed.
While the scene in Paris might not exactly be that exciting in the clubs, for DJs like Dan Ghenacia orD’Julz things are shaping up nicely.
Dyed has already been tipped by Clive Henry on Beatportal to go on to bigger and better things and his first few releases have proved popular amongst those who like their house music, deep and hypnotically funky.
Describe your first DJ gig.
It was at the Batofar [an infamous Parisian afterhours club] in 1999.
Dan Ghenacia was the resident at the Kwality afterparty and he invited me to play.
It was a dream come true because all my favorite DJs played there so you can imagine how stressed I was.
When I finally played, it worked really well and even now I stress before playing but it’s a productive stress.
What track has influenced you most?
Chez Damier ‘Can You Feel It (MK dub)’ on KMS.
It’s the first proper house track I heard.
My brother use to rave a lot, and one day he came home with a mix tape and this track was on it.
I totally fell in love with it!
How did you become close with Freak ’n’ Chic?
I mostly produce for them because we’ve been friends for many years now.
I was there in the beginning of the adventure, but it took me a bit of time to get into the production process, but I’m all ready now.
What’s the best gig you’ve played so far?
My best gig was at Fabric, the second time I played there.
I was more comfortable in the club because it was my second time, the club was full, the sound system amazing and more than anything, the audience was extraordinary.
Who is your biggest influence and why?
I’m on a housier vibe and Chez Damier
and Derrick Carter
have got the groove, so I always have one of their tunes in my box.
How did you learn to produce and DJ?
I’ve always been into music since a young age, but in the beginning I was more into hip hop.
I discovered electronic music through my older brother.
After going to a few parties I started to buy records, but I didn’t know how to DJ, so I decided to organize parties instead.
I use to run an infamous party called React at Les Bains Douches for three years, hosting Dan Ghenacia, Terry and Ivan Smagghe.
At that time I become really close to the guys who showed me the basics of DJing.
It took time to get into production because I had to find what kind of music I wanted to create, so I was more interested in buying records than producing.
If you weren’t a DJ what would you be doing for a living now?
When I was a kid I wanted to be a basketball player but Madame Nature decided differently!
What’s next from you?
Look out for a new remix for Anthony Collins coming out on Freak ’n’ Chic in August and one on Tsuba in mid September, and few other projects such as a release on Crosstown Rebels with legendary producer Aaron Carl.
Tell us your top five records?
1) Carsten Jost & Carsten Klemann ‘CC01 (Detroit)-original mix’ (Dial records)
2) Argy, The Mole ‘Cantsandlovegetaway’ (Poker Flat)
3) Oleg Poliakov ‘Midnight Vultures’ (Circus Company)
