Layo and Bushwacka unleash ‘Rio’

When Layo & Bushwacka secured a top ten slot with ‘Love Story’ a few years ago, people suddenly became aware of the soundclash style that the duo had honed to make their own.

Those that have witnessed their edifying DJ sets should already be reaching for the “Buy Release” button when you see there’s a new GU mix CD out capturing a live slice of L&A from Brazil.

With a brace of acclaimed artist albums already to their name, ‘Rio’ aptly highlights Layo & Bushwacka’s eclectic and highly diverse record selection.

At times, it’s a nostalgic house trip (Kym Mazelle, Marshall Jefferson, KC Flight, Eddie Flashin’ Fowlkes and Pierre’s Phantasy Club).

At other times, you wanna turn off the lights and let the minimal electronica envelope you to the sounds of Tiga, Guy Gerber, Richie Hawtin and Henrik Schwarz.

In between, the tempos fluctuate to an assortment of house flavours — from deep percussive tribalism, to, at times, almost progressiveness, and all without missing a beat.

Their selection is refreshing without being too anal, combining familiar elements in juxtapose compulsive collages that, whilst best savoured on a dancefloor, are still highly enjoyable at home.
