Layo & Bushwacka see in the new year

Layo & Bushwacka see in the new year

Following Layo & Bushwacka’s earlier DJ movements in Brazil, the British duo are back with another installment from the road, this time covering their Christmas and New Year’s Eve gigs in the country.

Christmas Eve, Pacha, Sao Paulo

So in London, we usually celebrate on Christmas Day itself and I think it is the same in the US, but in Europe and Latin America it is most definitely on Christmas Eve, and of course it is cold in London, judging by the weather report, very cold.

Well here, in Sao Paulo today it is about 30 degrees and although you still get all the images of Santa in his red get up and the trees are everywhere with lights, it definitely feels different. Christmas dinner started late, about 11.30, and was over quick.

Presents were super fast too, Matt came over for our dinner and it was cool, not too Christmas, but cool.

Then the night gets going. We went to a party in the hills at a house in Sao Paulo and the music was provided by Movimento Samba Funk and it was shaping up to be a good party but we had to go. Pacha SP is a little way out, maybe 20 minutes from the centre and it’s big, not sure how much but easy 3000.

In general though I prefer clubs that aren’t a franchise. Pacha in Ibiza is a beautiful place, especially up on the roof, but I am not that into the homogenised idea of it around the world. I like clubs that are part of the culture of the place but that’s just my view I guess.

Anyhow we played inside which was fine but the real set was on the terrace. We played from 6.30 to 8.30 outside and that was a way different Christmas morning for sure. We played fairly party as it had that feeling being the season, but it was the right thing and felt electric from the off. Check out Matt’s photos and video…

Trancoso

Beach Party 28/12

Trancoso in Bahia is fantastic simply put, beautiful, special, charming, and so on.

We did an intimate beach party for 200 friends, Sandy Riviera dropped by, who was playing at a club nearby, which was a nice surprise and it was the first time we met since the whole ‘Love Story’ vs ‘Finally’ track from years back. Anyhow, a near full moon, on a beach, drinks, friends, you can imagine, and if not check out Matt’s photos, but the real beach party for us is of course NYE, which here is something else.

Everyone in white, maybe with a colour attatched wishing for something for the year ahead (pink for love, yellow for money, etc.), 1800 people on the beach from 11pm to 10am (you have to stop then as it gets too hot). We played from 2am to 5 and it was over so quickly, in fact it was more a night that when I started to remember what I had been up to, was with a mixture of pain and pleasure.

We first did this party six years ago and it was free and we played for free which seemed to shock many DJs we knew, but for us, it was natural. The party first and then money, definitely not the other way around. But this has grown a lot since then and there are sponsors, many more people, and big production, but the soul is still totally there.

We then went straight to the airport to catch a plane to Buenos Aires to play Crobar. I felt so rough by the time we got to Sao Paulo to connect, a super tough journey, but we love Buenos Aires. It’s a beautiful city and the people really know how to kick back.

In the old days there, the crowd would all sit down at a particular point and then slowly get back up and go wild.

Something to see - very unique and amazing for the party. This was our first time playing at Crobar.

Well it is now 7.30am in my hotel room, and though I’m battered, I’m really happy. It went off big time. I talked earlier of the idea of dialogue and connection and we defintely had it tonight.

Fantastic night, didn’t even remember I felt rough! We were able to go deep, slow it down, and then rebuild, which is so free, you get so much more out of playing and the crowd get so much more from us.

Three hours of sleep onto Punta del Este in Uruguay which is a first for us…

It is beautiful as we arrive, crystal blue sky and the sea stretches out around the coast. I love the sky in the southern hemisphere. It seems clearer somehow. From here, Cape Town, New Zealand, I have always thought it, not sure if there is anything scientific in it but it’s a great feeling.

We arrive at the club at 2.30am but are told people only arrive at 3! It is packed by 4.30 and we play till 8.30. Again fantastic energy, but
it felt that we had to keep it up.

I think playing over Christmas and New Year can make people expect more party in the music than maybe normally and maybe it also attracts more a cross section of people who go out, so some who are not there just on the music tip.

But that is fine, we are invited and it’s up to us to get the conversation going.

Happy New Year to you all.
