Laurent Garnier’s first club EP in 5 years: ‘Back To My Roots’
18 April, 2008 | 12.31PM- Section: Music News Topics: DJ Gossip
French techno superstar Laurent Garnier is about to drop his first dancefloor-focused EP in five years, ‘Back To My Roots’ EP.
Understandably, there’s plenty of fuss in clubland about the Frenchman’s new release, not least because it came about after a magical set at Berlin’s Panorama Bar on February 29th this year.
Laurent Garnier was due to come off the decks at 5am, but was having such a good time he asked to play on, which he did for another three hours.
“During that time I played the demo mix of the ‘Back To My Roots’ track, which I’d made that week (the B side wasn’t even made yet),” said Laurent Garnier.
“Dixon jumped on me to ask what it was. He said that he loved the sound of it and asked me what I wanted to do with it, mentioning that he would really like to release it on Innervisions.
“I went back home on the Monday and worked straight away on another track, which I named ‘Panoramix’ (a tribute to that night at Panorama).
“I sent a very rough demo to Dixon via download and received a text five minutes later saying that he wanted it. It happened really fast without me having any plans at all.”
Dixon explains that the track inspired him straight away, and he detected it was an instant classic.
“When Laurent played ‘Back To My Roots’ at Panorama, I immediately had the feeling that I was listening to a classic.
“It’s a very unique timeless production. Not hip, not modern, not oldschool,” said Dixon.
“It is also a 12 minutes journey that is worth to play for that long.
“We are very happy that Laurent told me straight away in the club that he would be cool with releasing this EP on our label. Well - and lets not forget about THAT B-side.”
It’s an exciting musical partnership then, which puts one of the leading stars of France’s electronic music scene on one of the coolest house labels in the world.
The release comes ahead of Laurent Garnier’s new album, due for release in late 2008.
