The problem with most underground scenes is that when they start to break into the main stream a lot of bandwagon jumpers tend to dilute the musical output and many tunes start merging into one, big homogenous sound.

It takes a few select artists or labels to push the musical direction into new areas, to push through experimentation and imagination into their output; Forsaken is one of these people.

Originating from Bristol, Forsaken has had a history of imaginative and original dubstep, from the eastern sounding ‘Boat Noodles’ on Punch Drunk, through to his 2-step release ‘Hypnotised’ on Immerse Records.

The varied sources, influences and styles have put Forsaken ahead of the bandwagon.

New track ‘Last Saloon Swagger’, on Soul Motive, combines the old west and the southwest (Bristol), creating a highly original country and western grime hybrid.

It bases itself around an old western saloon piano loop, with sharp, off kilter and very percussive beats and a filtered down low bass backing the track throughout.

As the track progresses there are segmented guitar licks that set the mood of the track. Right from the start there are acoustic western guitar licks, which culminate in the final few bars when the gain kicks right in.

One can only imagine that this is the point during the film where the bar fight kicks in, shot glasses are thrown against the wall and one of the protagonist is swinging from the chandelier.

Described by Martin Blackdown (scene journalist and one half of Dusk & Blackdown) as ‘Laughing in the face of soulless gnarly tech-tunes and wobble-clones, that the fact that as it divides listeners only goes to prove it’s pushing boundaries’. It is a 100% must own for those into spaghetti western dubstep.
