Ladi6 ‘Walk Right Up’
Ladi6 ‘Walk Right Up’
23 July, 2010 | 12.12PMNew Zealand’s not the spot I think of when I want to hear some fresh hip-hop smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop appeal to it, but today I might have to reconsider that notion. Bringing some something jazzy, classic, and yet altogether new to the table is New Zealand’s own Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati). The video for ‘Walk Right Up’ is but a tidbit of the sounds captured by her debut full-length album, ‘Time Is Not Much.’ Alternating between dropping rhymes and exercising her lovely vocals, Tamati is like the Kiwi Lauryn Hill. But don’t take my word for it, check the video and the album to see for yourself.
If her voice sounds familiar, that might be because you recognize her from appearances with Fat Freddy’s Drop, whose appearances on Sonar Kollektiv
and collabs with Recloose
make the unlikely connection between New Zealand dub, German downtempo, and Detroit techno. It’s a small world after all!
