Labels to Watch 2011: When In Doubt

It might seem strange that Dave Huismans’ new label is called When In Doubt. After all, self-doubt doesn’t seem to play much of a role in his own productions. As both 2562 [a] and A Made Up Sound [a], Huismans is known for headstrong rhythms that fuse elements of dubstep and techno without ever stopping to please the genre police.

Now he extends his efforts to a new label intended as a showcase for his own productions—and whatever else he deems to fit the bill. The label’s first release is a vinyl-only affair, but we couldn’t resist the chance to recognize one of the scene’s most visionary craftsmen.

What’s the vision or guiding philosophy behind your label, and what sets you apart? How many people are running it?

It’s a small-scale operation, just me running it. I started it as a place to put out my forthcoming 2562 album, but unlike my label for A Made Up Sound, it may also release other people’s music, whenever I come across something that truly hits me, whatever the style. It doesn’t even have to be dance music, although it can be. As long as it’s personal and means something outside of the club-context. I’m just not interested in putting out X amount of records every year just to keep a business running, provide tracks for my DJ sets or build a profile. The ellipsis as the label’s logo reflects this. If it takes a year or more until the next suitable release presents itself, that’s ok.

What can we expect to see from the label in 2011?

First the 2562 album-sampler “Aquatic Family Affair” b/w “This Is Hardcore” (doubt000), which comes out as a limited 10” this week, then the album Fever (doubt001lp/cd), early April. I have one or two ideas beyond that, but they are far from materialized.

Which record label, past or present, would you name as an inspiration or role model for what you do, and why?

I hadn’t thought about that; the only incentive to start the label was finishing the new LP, which I wanted to put out in a new context free of genre-associations. I pretty much jumped into it headfirst. We’ll see what happens.
