Label Recommendation: Jeremy Caulfield and Dumb-Unit Records
9 August, 2008 | 2.31AMJeremy P. Caulfield is the label head of Dumb-Unit and a DJ originally from Toronto, Canada who relocated to Berlin in the early 2000s.
His label features stripped down yet interesting minimal music and has been doing so for years, before the so-called ‘minimal craze’.
Beatport caught up with him in Berlin to hear more about his label projects.
Beatport: What musical productions are you working on lately?
Jeremy P Caulfield: I’ve been on the road for the last 5 weeks and before that really busy with traveling through Europe too, so I have not had much time.
I have a few weeks back now in Berlin so I’m trying to get some new stuff done for fall.
Beatport: What is slated to be released this summer on Dumb Unit?
Jeremy P Caulfield: So far we’ve had a new release from Donor/Truss, A London/NYC team. Also there will be a new record by Elon, another New Yorker who also releases on Clink.
And up next is Lee Curtis’ summer bomb called ‘Smut’ - A different affair for Dumb-Unit but something I’ve been playing a lot lately.
Beatport: How was it touring in South America? Organic techno with Latin rhythms have become popular lately in the world of minimal. Do you notice that trend in South America as well?
Jeremy P Caulfield: South America was great.
I had an apartment in Buenos Aires for 3 week so I really was able to explore the city and I loved it.
The city is really something special as were the other parts of South America I visited.
As for music, the artists I worked and hung out with are just your typical dark minimalists.
Perhaps there’s a nuance of Latin rhythm in their music, but we / they avoid the obvious “riffs”.
The trend is popular all over the world because it’s accessible and easy I think.
But there are different levels or complexities in injecting fusion into minimal…
Like anything - It can be done well or not.
Beatport: In hindsight, What was the hardest thing that you had to deal with when relocating your entire label from North America to Europe?
Jeremy P Caulfield: Just the day to day affairs: taxes, legalities, etc.
The music and artistry end of it has always been enjoyable.
Of course we are now in a much bigger and more competitive scene and so pressure to put out the best stuff possible is present, but I view this as healthy and necessary part of running a label
Beatport: Being an outsider in Berlin, What trait do you think marks you as “Canadian”?
Jeremy P Caulfield: Our Humor I guess is the most obvious.
Also I think Germans sense the real differences between Canadians and Americans.
