Para One, Surkin + Bobmo launch Marble

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “marble"—grand, Grecian columns? Clattering cat’s eyes and alleys? Or perhaps a particularly juicy steak?

You could say that all of those concepts are at play in the music of Marble, a new label from Para One, Surkin [a] and Bobmo that springs forth from the ashes of Institubes [l]. Soaring architectural forms, an innocent spirit of play, and fat, meaty beats come together to create some of the most exciting music to come out of Paris in some time.

As the Marble Players, they’re turning out tracks that go way beyond stereotypical “bangers”; in their own words, “the Marble project is not just about a new specific subgenre, it is more about meeting people and ideas, trying new things, maybe choosing more risky, extreme paths than before. This is about creating fresh ways to talk to bodies and emotions, with a cool maniac attitude to track making, and putting in the same musical capsule familiar, comforting feelings with unknown, estranged vibes…”

We reached out to the group to find out more; read on for Para One’s answers, and check out the label’s website for further information.

Introducing Marble by Marble Music

First of all, what happened to Institubes? Why did that project come to an end, after eight years?

Well, the Institubes era had to come to an end. The label faced financial difficulties due to its rather heavy structure, and the original concept—creating beautiful objects, non genre-restricted, with a lot of signed artists and a whole operational staff at the office—was not relevant anymore and could not fit in the industry as it is now in 2011. It’s their decision and when we heard about it, with Surkin and Bobmo, we thought that we should start something on our own and keep on bringing our own vision of dance music to the fans. All the artists are very proud of the legacy that we built over the years, and it was certainly a sad episode in our careers, but we had to move forward.

What is the idea behind the Marble label, and where does the name come from?

We didn’t need to have our label to release new music, we could obviously sign on our friends’ labels all around. But we wanted to keep the family united because we always worked as a crew, we’re very used to discussing the music and sharing the enjoyment! It would have been sad to just split. Our friends Teki Latex and Orgasmic were already doing good with Sound Pellegrino, and we decided to build our own structure, one that would be kind of similar but based on our own musical obsessions.

Aesthetically, it’s a bit early to define our guidelines, but it will definitely reflect our love for all kind of ghetto club scenes, with a spice of what we hope would be a futuristic vision, blending UK funky, juke or any new, exciting genres with classic house or techno moves. The name “Marble” came naturally, we just love that word, and its double meaning is pretty fun—schoolyard entertainment meets classy and cold layouts.

How long have the three of you been sharing a studio space, and what is the atmosphere there like?

It’s been a year. We share studios with other musicians too, and the atmosphere is pretty casual and relaxed, to say the least! We’re all good friends and it’s super inspiring to spend time together. We can swap ideas and collaborate on new projects… Being there all together every day of the week is a great motivation for us. It definitely influences our solo projects too, in a good way! Music is something that should be shared, in the studio or in the clubs, that’s what Marble is about.

How did “Marble Anthem” come together? What did you use to get that bucephalous bouncing ball sound?

We used… a marble! Just a pack of marbles that we got out of a local store, and we recorded them bouncing and rolling on Surkin’s studio table. Pretty simple setup, as you can see. The idea was to bring on anthemic house stabs and make them follow that bouncing pattern. So that it would be loud and banging in a club, but with a weird, experimental twist.

So far, we’ve seen Marble releases from Para One, Surkin, Bobmo & Teki Latex. Who else will be turning up on the label?

We have EPs from Myd, Canblaster, Sam Tiba (from Club Cheval), and Das Glow to come. And many others later on, you’ll hear more about those soon.

What’s the French scene like these days? And, having asked that, do you guys identify with the French scene, or is it more of a global thing for you? I ask because there’s so much influence from all over in your music…

The French scene is evolving a lot. Lots of new “families” are rising up very fast, like Club Cheval, Youngunz, Sound Pellegrino… All these labels bring fresh music that take influences from all over, especially the UK scene, at the moment, but it keeps changing all the time. French music has always been internationally influenced, that’s almost a trademark! We could not find inspiration only in the French scene, that would be too restrictive. We want to keep our ears and minds open to any cool new sound.
