Label of the Week: Nervous Records

Label of the Week: Nervous Records

When New York City’s Nervous Records [l] released their initial tune in 1991 the first Iraq war was still raging, MC Hammer and his baggy pants were in the charts, and dance music was still an infant, dribbling and peeing over itself.

Sixteen years on, Nervous is one of the biggest house labels in the world and is responsible for some of the scene’s most memorable records. But even now, Nervous is releasing classics and that’s why it’s Beatportal’s Label of the Week.

“Club culture, styles and trends are important, but as a record label we look for music that stands up on its own outside of the trends,” Nervous’ Michael Weiss tells Beatportal.

“We try to release tracks that will sound good today, next year and in five years.

“And our best releases through the years like Loni Clark ‘Rushing’, Nuyorican Soul ‘The Nervous Track’ and Byron Stingily ‘Get Up Everybody’ do in fact get played and remixed over and over again because they represent quality music.”

Nervous’ first ever release was Niceguy Soulman ‘Feel it’, which was produced by Roger Sanchez, and since then the label hasn’t looked back.

Over the years it has produced a plethora of top-notch house and soulful house records, including last year’s seminal electro-tinged house tune Cicada ‘The Things You Say’.

Nervous also scored a hit with Ralph Falcon (pictured above) ‘I Need Someone’ which is currently one of the biggest tracks in clubland, and it is blowing up big style.

But things haven’t always been gravy for Nervous Records [l].

“Prior to the launch of the digital sites, our physical sales took a major dive in 2001,” Weiss admits.

“It looked bad. But since 2003 everything has looked better.

“Our revenues from digital sales and ringtones are going up every month.”

For real house music straight out of New York City, head straight for Nervous.
