Culture Shock [RAM Records]

Featured earlier this year on the fourth installment of Andy C’s ‘Nightlife’ series, this track is perhaps one of the most unique tunes to come out of the drum & bass scene this year.

With more emphasis on its 4/4 structure and less on the breakbeats, this offering from d&b new boy Culture Shock [a] washes over, sounding like a hybrid between Etienne De Crecy [a] and Sub Focus [a].

Making a name for himself last year collaborating with the Brookes Brothers [a] on the RAM Records release ‘ReWork’, Culture Shock has already crafted an individual sound for himself, standing out from his contemporaries with his rounded, electro sounding synthesizers, progressive buildups and 4/4 snaps.

This offering is a pleasant surprise among contemporary releases that have stuck to age old formulas and sounds, and with its French undertones and housier direction it’s more likely to help invigorate some ingenuity back into a scene currently dominated by the UK ‘jump-up’ massive.

This production stands alongside the likes of DJ Fresh’s ‘Gold Dust’ and Sub Focus’ ‘Join The Dots’ as more electro and techy drum & bass, as these producers are now reaching out to different musical styles to source their inspirations and create a symbiosis between electro house, techno and drum & bass.
