Kraak and Smaak prep new material
29 January, 2008 | 3.42PM- Section: Music News Topics: House Nation
I’m reliably informed that Kraak & Smaak take their name from an old Dutch proverb meaning neither here nor there, and has naught to do with Class As.
After their terrific ‘Boogie Angst’ opus in 2005, the trio now flip the script for the hip-house delight ‘Funk Ass Rotator’ featuring Dutchman Ro Krom.
1980s reference points are also in abundance as the tempos rock to the rhythm in a vintage style.
‘Funk Ass Rotator’ is backed with the equally clubby ‘Mad As Hell’ — taking a line from an obscure disco track and mixing it up with enhanced percussion, guitar licks and filtered breaks, the chemistry is a kinetic one, sounding not unlike a modern day slab of P-Funk laid siege at the hands of Talking Heads.
In quick succession later this month, the group will unleash yet more musical ill behaviour on their distinctive leftfield outing ‘That’s Our Word EP’ featuring Stones Throw hero Dudley Perkins and 1980s jazz legend Carmel on vocal duties.
The band is currently touring Holland with their new material before they release their new album and first proper single in March.
