Korpikansa EP

Uusitalo [Huume Recordings]

Many things to many men and women, Finnish maverick producer Vladislav Delay’s current incarnation sees him re-live the glory days of disco.

Being a European, that means not the debauchery of Studio 54 but the high-energy groove of Rimini.

While there are a slew of poor Italo tribute tracks in circulation, ‘Korpikansa’ is nothing like its pulsing rivals.

(Italo is in danger of becoming, like contemporary minimal, the latest trendy style to rehash and tout a watered down version of the original real deal.)

For starters, there’s Delay’s predelicition for constructing tracks without a discernible start, middle and end, as well as his love of experimental sounds.

Stopping, starting and then stopping again, the crunchy, glitchy drums hint at his techno background, while the infectious yet vaguely seedy hooks are a reminder that his work as Luomo is one of the best examples of a producer working at the pop/techno interface.

These elements would mean little without Delay’s ability to conjure up a mean bassline, and the moody pulses that drag these productions onto the dance floor represent Italo’s seedy underbelly: beefed up for the requirements of the modern club perhaps, they still represent a moment in time when the party turned sour and the paranoia set in – and that’s what makes them so vital.
