Gabriel Ananda and Dominik Eulberg...
26 February, 2008 | 10.50AM- Section: Music Reviews
The last time these two clashed heads on Traum was for ‘Harzer Roller’, a glorious, elegant track that arguably set the template for Traum’s recent anthemic direction.
While on this occasion the beats are distinctly rougher (in keeping with Ananda’s loose-limbed style), the pair still find time to engage in their trademark euphoric harmonies on both cuts.
‘NGC 101’ is the dancefloor monster here, countering church organ grandeur with fuzzed out delays, thumping subs and an insistent high-end percussive clip.
By the time the super-dramatic strings drop in the last third, the cut has swelled to gargantuan proportions, paving the way for major crowd-pleasing potential.
Meanwhile, ‘Supernova’ is an elegantly moody techno hymn, layering a buzzy, pastoral synth lead over restrained but powerful minimal-ish rhythms.
The grand melodies may not appeal to those who like their techno dark and abstract, but for fans of the genre’s more emotive strands, it’s a treat.
It’s often the case that well known producers’ collaborations end up in disappointment, but this is one pair who seem to bring the best out of each other.
