You know the old adage of never judge a book by its cover?

Well, the same could be said of a record by its title.

Dick Dickler and the pornographic referencing ‘A Night With Dick’ on Max Trax Records is actually a new pseudonym for Kerri Chandler, although the musical content is still very much PG rated.

‘The Bar’, by way of example, starts off with a phone sex message before EQ aka The XTC Queen delivers a poetic tale of foreplay, passion and erotica over a deeply penetrating house groove.

‘The Drive’ starts out the same way before launching into a chunky 4/4 backbeat that Chandler adds sexy adlibs atop.

‘The Eye Tattoo’ on the other hand has a real Buzzin’ Fly quality to its simple, yet totally absorbing and delicate piano lines, that are underpinned with an equally simple backbeat and ethereal vocal licks.

Finally, the cheeky ‘The Tapes’ starts with a comic monologue for two wheeling-dealing Irishmen before the chords and beats kick and it envelopes into another quality soul-kissed offering.

A mainstay in garage music’s evolution since the 1980s ‘Kaos 6:23’, Chandler is constantly creating quality material, and with the added spice of sex in the equation, this can’t fail.

Amazingly, I made it all the way through this blog without a euphemism in sight — I’m slipping!
